The Senate on Wednesday approved a
bill introducing a national day for the right to safe fun on
December 8 to coincide with the anniversary of a stampede at a
nightclub in the Marche in which six people died.
The bill also providing for special initiatives for young people
organised by local authorities and schools and targeted
information and awareness-raising campaigns passed with 144
votes in favour and four abstentions.
It will now go to the Lower House for final approval.
The initiative honours the memory of five adolescents and a
39-year-old woman who were killed in a stampede triggered by a
gang using pepper spray at the "Lanterna Azzurra" nightclub in
Corinaldo near Ancona on December 8, 2018.
Six young people were subsequently sentenced to between 10
years, five months and 12 years, four months in relation to the
incident in which over 100 people were also injured.
They had intended to take advantage of the disruption to steal
valuables at the nightclub where crowds were waiting to see a
show by popular Italian rapper Sfera Ebbasta.
