The parents of Michelle Maria Causo, a 17-year-old girl stabbed to death in Rome last week, have dismissed the claim by the boy suspected of the homicide that a row over money sparked the lethal attack.
Causo's body was found inside a garbage bag in a shopping trolley next to a trash container in the Rome's Primavalle neighbourhood.
The brutality of the attack, the way the body was treated and the age of the victim and the alleged killer, also 17, have caused widespread shock and dismay in Italy.
During four hours of questioning before a preliminary investigations judge (GIP) on Saturday, the suspect said the lethal attack took place after a row over 20 euros he owed Causo for hashish, sources said.
"This story about the debt is nonsense," said Causo's mother Daniela Bertoneri, adding that she thinks the homicide was premeditated.
The girl's father told Corriere della Sera that he thinks his daughter was attacked after she repelled a sexual advance from her killer.
