European Internal Affairs Commissioner
Ylva Johansson said on Tuesday European Union member states are
taking a constructive approach to discussions on the new draft
Pact on Migration and Asylum and that agreement is possible.
"I believe it is possible to reach an agreement on the new
Migration Pact, the member states seem to have a constructive
approach, this is the right moment," said Johansson, speaking
ahead of the meeting of interior ministers at the Justice and
Home Affairs Council in Brussels on June 8-9.
"If we agree on a common approach to migration we will all be
winners, including migrants, because no country can go it
alone," she added, saying that "national debates instead try to
paint a winners and losers scenario".
The commissioner said she considers the draft pact to ensure
greater solidarity and responsibility sharing among member
states, which in a new draft would require countries that refuse
to accept the redistribution of migrants and asylum seekers
under a quota system to pay 22,000 euros for every person not
accepted, to be "balanced", even if there are "still things
that need to be perfected".
