A group of 75 migrants and refugees
rescued by the civil rescue ship Geo Barents operated by the
French non-governmental organization Doctors without Borders
(MSF) disembarked in the port of Naples on Thursday morning.
The group included 40 minors, of whom 35 unaccompanied minors
aged between 14 and 17 according to the municipal welfare
department, and 13 women.
They were rescued on Monday afternoon after their wooden boat
got into distress off the coast of Libya.
The arrivals will be accommodated temporarily in a former Covid
hospital pending their transfer to reception facilities in the
coming days.
Also on Thursday the Nadir sail boat operated by German NGO
Resqship disembarked on Lampedusa 41 migrants and refugees
rescued on Wednesday in the Maltese search and rescue area.
Among those rescued were seven woman and a 4-year-old child.
"The situation on the Med is dramatic. After only a few hours in
the area our crew was informed of numerous sea emergencies. Our
demand therefore remains unchanged: Protect people not borders,"
said the NGO on Twitter.
The group, from Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia,
Mali, Nigeria and South Sudan, said they had set sail from Sfax
in Tunisia early on Tuesday and that they had paid between 2,000
and 4,000 Tunisian dinars (600-1,200 euros) for the crossing.
