A couple who allegedly helped Mafia
superboss Matteo Messina Denaro evade capture for 30 years were
arrested in the western Sicilian town where he spent his years
on the run on Thursday.
The couple were arrested as investigations continued into the
network of accomplices who protected the 60-year-old Messina
Denaro before he was caught at a Palermo cancer clinic in
mid-January.
The Carabinieri of the ROS special unit arrested Emanuele
Bonafede, nephew of the Campobello di Mazara boss Leonardo
Bonafede, and his wife Lorena Ninfa Lanceri, for aiding and
abetting Italy's most wanted man, aggravated by using mafia
methods.
Lanceri was described by police as being "very close" to the
Trapanese mafia leader.
The military found a lot of evidence of the relationship between
the boss and Lanceri.
Messina Denaro, in order to hide her true identity, called her
Diletta.
She told him in a note that he was the "gift of my life", police
said.
