An Italian navy ship on Friday
intervened to help coast guard vessels cope with three migrant
boat rescues totalling some 1,300 endangered people in the
Ionian Sea.
"The Coast Guard in difficulty in the Italian Search and Rescue
(SAR) area, south-west of eastern Sicily and south-west of the
Ionian Sea, during interventions within its competence,
requested support from the Italian Navy," the defence ministry
said.
"The immediate intervention of the ship Sirio, already present
in the area for its own operational activities, was ordered to
supplement the Coast Guard vessels currently engaged on the
scene.
"The military ship is proceeding at the maximum speed allowed to
provide the requested assistance."
