United Nations Secretary General
Antonio Guterres on Monday called for the creation of safe
routes for asylum seekers in the wake of Sunday's migrant-boat
disaster off the coast of Calabria in which 62 people died and
dozens more are feared to have lost their lives.
"Yesterday the umpteenth terrible shipwreck in the Mediterranean
caused the death of dozens of people seeking a better future for
themselves and their children," Guterres said in Geneva.
"But as long as criminal gangs control the migration routes,
people will continue to die.
"We need safe, orderly and legal routes for migrants and
refugees.
"And we must do all we can to prevent the loss of life by
providing search and rescue operations and medical assistance,
as a humanitarian imperative and as a moral and legal
obligation".
