The crisis the River Po is enduring
has not let up, with the river still at worryingly low levels
despite recent rainfall in northern Italy, the ANBI
water-resource monitoring body said in its weekly report.
"The water crisis in the north is endemic, while in the south
the spectre of flooding has reappeared," ANBI said.
"Without new infrastructure, the situation will be increasingly
serious.
"It is necessary to create infrastructure to ensure water
reserves are homogenous all over the country or give up any hope
of food self sufficiency".
The level of the Po, Italy's biggest river, fell dramatically
last year due to a long drought and a series of heat waves.
Scientists say that extreme weather events like the heat waves,
supercharged storms, flooding and droughts are becoming more
frequent and more intense because of climate change caused by
human activity.
