The Italian Pediatric Society (SIP)
said on Wednesday that it has called on the government to
intervene to alleviate the intense pressure Italy's pediatric
surgeries and emergency-room departments are under.
It said the situation was particularly bad at the moment due to
a high level of infections from respiratory viruses, such as
respiratory syncytial virus, which is hitting infants under one
year of age above all, while COVID-19 and the flu virus are also
spreading.
"In some cases the situation is truly difficult, with record
levels of demand at emergency rooms, congestion in some
hospitals and all beds occupied," SIP said.
It added that many intensive care units were understaffed.
