An entire family was arrested in
Calabria Wednesday on suspicion of isolating and mistreating
another of its members, a 30-year-old woman with a slight
cognitive deficit, for years, police said.
The woman's parents, both 57, and her two sisters, aged 28 and
20, were arrested in the small town of San Ferdinando by
Carabinieri from the port city of Gioia Tauro.
They are accused of threatening, swearing at and verbally and
physically abusing their alleged victim, forcing her to live in
a dirty, wet and dingy room, police said.
The room was little more than a cubby hole housing bits of
domestic equipment, tools and bicycles, police said.
It was the only internal room with a lock on it, they said.
