Over 1,300 coffins are piled up in a
Palermo cemetery as the Sicilian capital's cremation ovens
continue to be out of action, a municipal councillor said
Monday.
Antonino Randazzo, of the populist 5-Star Movement (M5S), said
the number of bodies awaiting cremation had risen from 1,174
last July to 1,320 now.
"It's a dramatic trend that is continuing even with the new
mayor (Roberto Lagalla)," he said.
Randazzo voiced the hope that Lagalla would use the
commissioner's powers he had been given by Rome to tackle the
emergency and "use these powers to finally give fitting burial
to these people and put an end to the city's biggest emergency".
The coffins are piled up in storerooms in the Rotoli Cemetery.
