A 29-year-old Bangladeshi woman has
reported being physically and verbally attacked in the Marghera
area of Venice for wearing a niqab, a garment that covers the
head and face, except for the eyes.
The woman, the wife of an imam, reported the attack to
Carabinieri police after seeking medical treatment.
She said that initially was insulted and told that she looked
like a "ghost" and then kicked and punched.
She said she also had her headgear pulled off in the assault.
The victim has lived in Venice for over 15 years and speaks
Italian perfectly, having studied in the city.
The Marghera Muslim community has said it intends to stage a
protest following the attack, local newspapers reported.
