The pope is saddened by the death of
a tramp in St Peter's Square Thursday night, the Vatican said
Friday.
The homeless man, 61-year-old German Burkhard Scheffler, lived
on the streets of Rome for decades and was helped by the
Vatican's charity groups, said Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni.
His condition was sadly worsened by the recent days of rain and
cold in the Italian capital and he was found dead near the St
Peter's Colonnade.
"In his prayer, the pope recalls Burkhard and all those who are
forced to live without a home, in Rome and around the world, and
invites the faithful to join with him," said Bruni.
