There has been a fresh weekly drop in
COVID-19 cases in Italy and the number of admissions to ICUs is
down again, health foundation GIMBE said Thursday.
In the week from October 19 to 25, it said, infections were down
14.4%, intensive care cases down 8.7%, hospital admissions up
1.6% and deaths up 2.8%, all compared to the previous week.
GIMBE Foundation President Nino Cartabellotta said weekly cases
were down for the second consecutive week, from over 275,000
last week to 236,000 this week, "with a seven day mobile average
of almost 34,000 case per day".
With the exclusion of Sicily, up 3.3%, the fall in new cases
regarded all Italian regions, ranging from -3.8% in Lazio to
-34.5% in the autonomous province of Bolzano, GIMBE said in its
report.
Intensive care cases have started to decrease again after three
consecutive weeks of increases, GIMBE said, while admissions to
general wards "have been stabilizing," according to the report.
In absolute terms, the COVID bed occupied in intensive care,
after reaching a maximum of 254 on October 17, fell to 232 by
October 25; while in general wards, after reaching a minimum of
3,293 on September 24, they reached a recent high of 7,106 on
October 25, the report said.
Some 559 people died with COVID over the last week with a daily
average of 80 deaths a day compared to 78 during the previous
week, the report said.
GIMBE added that some 7.4 million Italians were still without
their third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, the first booster jab,
according to the report.
And it said that 21.4% of the population had not had the fourth
vaccine dose, or second booster.
