Mortality among the over-80s in Italy
peaked in July due to the unusually hot weather, ISTAT said
Tuesday.
There weer over 62,000 deaths in the over 80 age bracket that
month, around 20% higher than in previous years, the stats
agency said.
There had also been a significant uptick in deaths in 2015 due
to climate factors, said ISTAT.
In the first six months of this year, said the national
statistics office, there were 357,000 over 80 deaths, or 21,000
fewer than in the first half of 2020 and 16,000 down on the same
period in 2021.
But the 2022 figure was still 6% higher than the average of the
2015-2019 period.
