Rome prosecutors have opened a probe
into an elderly former Argentinian army officer, now ill and
living as an Italian citizen in Sicily, in the deaths of eight
people as part of Operation Condor, the systematic
'disappearance' of political opponents by South American juntas
in the 70s and 80s.
The man, Carlos Malatto, allegedly took part in the campaign of
repression that produced thousands of 'Desaparecidos'.
Argentina's secretary of state for human rights, Horacio
Pietragalla Corti, on Wednesday filed a complaint urging Italian
prosecutors to investigate another 30 cases of dead or
disappeared people who went missing in the Argentine town of San
Juan between 1976 and 1977.
