A just over one-year-old boy died in
hospital near Ferrara Wednesday after falling into a cistern
filled with sewage and other industrial run-off liquids in the
courtyard of his home at Portomaggiore in the province of
Ferrara Tuesday afternoon.
Police said it appeared that the cover of the cistern, in a part
of the courtyard adjacent to the family firm, had given way.
The boy died of his injuries in a hospital at Cona.
The 13-month-old child had been fighting for his life since he
got to hospital.
An autopsy has been ordered.
