A 27-year-old man with a criminal record was arrested near Naples Monday on suspicion of kicking and biting his 35-year-old pregnant girlfriend in the street because she wanted to leave him, judicial sources said.
The man allegedly punched, kicked and bit the eight-week-pregnant woman in the street at Pozzuoli, where passersby called the police.
He has been charged with domestic abuse.
The woman was taken to hospital for tests which showed that the foetus is OK.
She reportedly told police she had been the victim of similar attacks by the man in the past, dating back to about a year.
Doctors said the woman's injuries would heal in seven days.
The two reportedly went shopping and when they were back in the car the woman told the man she wanted to leave him, prompting an extremely violent reaction which continued even after she had managed to flee the vehicle.
