The Omicron 2 variant of COVID-19 has
been sequenced in Italy for the first time at a Genoa
laboratory, the lab said Friday.
The Policlinico San Martino Lab, directed by Professor Giancarlo
Icardi, said it had sequences two cases, one during a routine
sequencing at the San Martino and the other deriving from
national monitoring.
It is not yet known whether Omicron 2 spreads faster than
Omicron, which is much more infectious but reportedly slightly
less severe than earlier strains.
