Rainstorms and hailstorms swept
central and southern Italy Thursday as the 'Immaculate Storm',
named after the Feast of the Immaculate Conception Wednesday,
continued to pelt the country with wintry weather.
Heavy hail left streets covered in a white layer in Naples,
Rome, and other cities.
Torrential rain turned streets into rivers in and around Caserta
north of Naples.
Three elderly people were evacuated near Avellino south of
Naples.
Northern Italy, meanwhile, saw snow in the Alps and other
mountains, at relatively low altitudes.
At Asiago, north of Milan, it has been snowing for three days
and the snow has reached a depth of 90cm on high.
The weather across Italy will improve starting Friday though
some parts will see further rain, especially in the north.
