Filippo Piccone, a former MP for
Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia (FI) party, was among 25 people
arrested on Monday for allegedly defrauding the State via
corruption in the province of L'Aquila town of Celano, in the
central Abruzzo region.
Celano Mayor Settimio Santilli, a member of the right-wing
Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, was also among the suspects
arrested by Carabinieri police, along with town officials,
professionals and entrepreneurs living in the provinces of
L'Aquila, Rome, Teramo and Pescara.
Around 100 police offices took part in dawn raids to arrest the
suspects.
