A 25-year-old man was arrested
Friday after allegedly breaking into a home in the Marche town
of Jesi and killing a 69-year-old woman with a glass shard from
the broken window.
The woman's husband is in serious condition.
The incident happened at about five thirty Friday morning in the
town near Macerata.
The husband, 74-year-old Italo Giuliani, said he and his wife
Fiorella Scarponi were woken up by the noise of the young man
breaking into their home.
The intruder lashed out at Scarponi and slit her throat with the
glass shard, said Giuliani, who was rushed to hospital in code
red.
Neighbours heard the couple's screams and called the police who
found the alleged assailant hiding behind a hedge.
The attacker, who lives with his mother in the same area, may
have had psychiatric problems, said Ancona Carabinieri chief
Cristian
Carrozza.
"The episode is apparently without a motive," he said.
