The number of people in employment in
Italy was down 272,000 in April with respect to March, ISTAT
said Wednesday.
It was down about half a million compared to April 2019, the
statistics agency said.
Due to the coronavirus lockdown, ISTAT said, "employment
marked a drop of almost 300,000 units, and this led to the
overall drop of 400,000 workers and a percentage point in the
employment rate".
The unemployment rate fell from 8% in March to 6.3% in April,
its lowest since November 2007, because of an estimated 484,000
fewer people looking for work (down 23.9% on March, but -1.1
million in a year, or -41.9%).
The number of inactive people rose by 746,000 units from
March to April and by 1.4 million from April to April, people
who do not have and are not seeking work.
