A waste-compacting truck fell into
a large sinkhole near Naples on Monday.
The sinkhole was said to be several dozen metres wide and
deep.
It suddenly appeared in the square in front of the Basilica
di San Mauro church at Casoria.
The truck driver was rescued by fire fighters and is now in
hospital for checks.
The street has been cordoned off and seven residential
buildings evacuated.
Water and electrical power supplies to the area have been
interrupted.
According to bystanders, a strong smell of gas was smelled in
the area.
