Lazio regional environment
agency ARPA said Wednesday that it registered a rise in
pollution levels on Tuesday after a huge blaze at a
waste-processing plant in the north of the capital.
The facility handled a big chunk of the capital's waste and
there are also fears that the loss of structure could throw the
city's already troubled waste-management system into crisis.
Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi, however, said Wednesday that
central government and other regions had responded to her appeal
for help and there would not be a refuse emergency over the
Christmas holidays.
"We are addressing the crisis in a structural way to prevent
the Christmas peak, which always happens," Raggi said.
