The two strong earthquakes that
hit central Italy Wednesday night caused cracks to appear in
some buildings in Rome, local sources said.
The structural lesions were reported in the northeast part
of the city, closest to the Marche epicentre of the 5.4 and 5.9
tremblers, while residents across the capital were spooked and
many took to the streets.
The foreign ministry HQ was evacuated as a precaution.
Experts on Thursday checked the Colosseum and other
cultural sites for damage and said they did not appear to have
been damaged.
The quakes were felt as far away as Friuli in the north and
even across the border in Austria.
