A 23-month-old girl
with type 1 diabetes has been turned away from four nursery
schools in the southern city of Reggio Calabria, a legal
association reported Thursday.
No teacher wants to be responsible should the child, who is
dependent on insulin, have a diabetic fit, the association said.
Reggio Calabria Mayor Giuseppe Falcomatà issued a
statement, saying the girl will be taken in by one of the city's
new public nursery schools "because it is mandatory for public
facilities to take in children affected by any type of
disability".
"We will be happy to welcome the little one in one of our
facilities so her mother can continue going to work with peace
of mind," the mayor said.
