Italy must not be left alone to
manage a flow of migrants of "historic" proportions, Senate
Speaker Pietro Grasso said on Tuesday.
"It is absolutely essential to encourage close discussion
with the European institutions in order for there to be a shared
common strategy for reception and integration," Grasso said.
Recent events have shown the lack of solidarity between EU
countries and of a strong and shared asylum policy, Italy's
former chief anti-mafia prosecutor said.
"If on the one hand I believe it is essential to firmly
combat migrant trafficking, on the other I consider a strong
common asylum policy and a new European legal immigration policy
to be equally essential," Grasso concluded.
