(see related) Four people,
possibly all women, were missing on Monday after being thrown
into the sea by traffickers off the Salento coast in southern
Puglia.
Earlier on Monday the body of a woman was recovered near
rocks not far from Capo di Leuca, one of three different points
where the group of migrants allegedly travelling to Italy from
Greece were forced overboard.
Investigators say the boat carried 42 people.
Five, including a 10-year-old boy, are now receiving
hospital treatment for hypothermia and bruising.
"These tragedies should lead everyone, particularly those
with political responsibility, to tackle these problems, to
quicken their step, so they might stop. More is now needed than
just pain and pity," monsignor Vito Angiuli, bishop of
Ugento-Santa Maria di Leuca, said Monday.
Monsignor Angiuli also called for "ideological barriers" to
be overcome and for the resolution of problems in source
countries to be sped up.
