A one-year-old child has been
hospitalised with malnutrition, Florence newspaper La Nazione
reported Thursday.
The child's parents, who live in a small town near Pisa,
are said to have been placed under investigation for
maltreatment.
In particular, prosecutors want to establish whether the
child was registered with a paediatrician and, in that case,
whether the doctor was aware of any anomalous practices used by
the parents, who both reportedly follow a vegan diet based on
plant-based foods alone.
Dieticians generally agree that the elimination of
animal-based foods from the diet of a developing child increases
the risk of deficiency in certain nutrients.
