An Italian man from Verona,
his Peruvian wife and their five-year-old son died Monday in a
boating accident on the the Maranon River in Peru, Carabinieri
military police in the northern city of Verona said Monday.
The Italian-Peruvian family and some 20 other passengers
were on board when their boat capsized 20 kms from the Imaza
district in northern Peru.
The group, which included Imaza District Mayor Otoniel
Danducho Akintui, had been returning from a visit to an
indigenous community.
Akintui survived, but another 11 people are missing,
sources said.
The Maranon is the principal source of the Amazon River,
arising about 160 km northeast of the Peruvian capital city of
Lima and flowing through a deeply eroded valley along the
eastern base of the Cordillera of the Andes mountain range.
