Italian and French police have arrested in Nice Antonio Lo Russo, a senior member of the Naples-based Camorra mafia and one of Italy's 100 most-wanted fugitives.
Lo Russo is the son of Salvatore Lo Russo, the jailed head of an infamously violent clan known to be at the centre of Naples drugs trade. Antonio Lo Russo has been sentenced to 20 years in jail for mafia association and drugs trafficking.
He sometimes used his connections in the past to get access the pitch-side area where photographers work during home matches of his favourite soccer club, Napoli, as captured in ANSA photographs. He was detained on Tuesday on Nice's seafront along with his 23-year-old cousin Carlo Lo Russo.
Carlo Lo Russo has been on the run for over a month and is wanted in relation to a stabbing believed to be a revenge attack following a shooting in which Antonio Lo Russo's uncle, Mario Lo Russo, was killed. That shooting is thought to have been caused by a dispute over a love affair. "Antonio Lo Russo, a dangerous fugitive wanted at the international level, has been handed over to justice," said Italian Interior Minister Angelino Alfano.
"It's a great success achieved thanks to the cooperation between the anti-mafia investigators, the Italian police and the French police".
