More than seven million people, or
13.2% of Italy's total population over the age of 11,
demonstrated behavior in 2013 that put them at risk of alcohol
abuse, the Italian statistical agency Istat said Wednesday.
"In young people, consumption is more frequently
occasional, but with a strong risk of binge drinking, while the
greater concern for adults and the elderly is excessive daily
consumption of alcohol," said Istat's Emanuela Bologna at
Alcohol Prevention Day in Rome, organized by an alcoholism
observatory within Italy's National Health Institute.
In 2013, 34.6 million people in Italy over age 11 - or
63.9% of the total population - admit to drinking at least one
type of alcoholic beverage during the year.
Of these, 12.3 million imbibe daily, Istat found.
