Retailers association Confcommercio's
research centre said Wednesday that 43 million people in Italy
will buy presents for Christmas 2023, with an average
expenditure of 186 euro per person.
That is up from 165 euro per head last year in real terms, it
said.
It said overall spending on Christmas gifts in Italy will amount
to eight billion euros.
That level exceeds the spending for the festive seasons of 2022
and 2021 (7.1 billion and 7.8 billion respectively at 2023
prices) but is still below that of 2020 (8.3 billion) and of the
pre-Covid period.
More than 73% of the people interviewed for the study will give
gifts, and about 4 in 10 of those who will do so consider buying
gifts "an expense they like to take on".
