Italy needs about ten years to become
energy self-sufficient, Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister
Antonio Tajani said on Friday.
"We can be competitive economically if we have a good energy
policy," said Tajani
at a round table meeting at the provincial headquarters of
Confindustria in Vicenza.
"I believe we can become self-sufficient, but we need about ten
years," he added.
"In a manufacturing country like ours, we have to face the
problem of the cost of energy. Solar and wind power will
certainly not be enough, renewables are important, but we must
work on what I think is the best possible solution, which is
fourth-generation nuclear power.
"It is the only instrument, in the long term, that can guarantee
us autonomy," he concluded.
