(see related story on extreme weather) Instead of going down, Italy's greenhouse-gas emissions increased by 2% between 2019 and 2022, according to a report presented on Tuesday at the Green Economy States General 2023 (Stati Generali della Green Economy) conference in Rimini.
    The report said 19% of Italy's energy demand was met by renewables last year, down from 21% in 2021.
    Italy does well, however, when it comes to recycling, the report said It said Italy recycles 72% of its waste, well above the European average of 58%.
    The report said Italy was 19th in the EU when it came to the amount of its territory awarded protected status.
    It said the number of cars on Italian roads was on the up and few vehicles were electric.
    It said 86% of cars in Italy are powered by petrol or diesel, above the average for other EU countries.
