Work is a right and paying taxes a
duty, President Sergio Mattarella said Wednesday.
Work, he said at the Knights of Labour award ceremony at the
presidential Quirinale Palace, means having "the ownership of a
right and , together, the attribution of a duty: that of
carrying out an activity or function which contributes to
society's material or spiritual growth.
"A symmetry between rights and futies in being citizens that we
find in many parts of the Constitution, starting with the
essential duties of political, economic and social solidarity,
up to article 53 on the duty on everyone's part to contribute to
public spending as far as their taxpaying capacity goes".
