Italy's unemployment rate climbed to
7.9% in January, up 0.1 of a percentage point on December, even
though the overall number of people in work stayed on an upward
trend, ISTAT said on Thursday.
The national statistics agency said over 23.3 million people
were in employment in January, up by 35,000, or 0.2% on
December, and by 459,000, or 2%, on the same month in 2022.
Overall, the employment rate grew to 60.8%, up 0.1 of a point in
a month.
ISTAT said the jobless rate for under-25s who are active on the
labour market rose to 22.9% in January, up 0.7 of a point with
respect to December.
The agency said the fact that both the unemployment and
employment rates had increased was explained by there being
fewer people who are not active on the labour market.
ISTAT said the inactivity rate declined to 33.9% in December,
down 0.2 of a point.
