Some 1.92 billion euros has been
earmarked for the civil service in 2017 and 2.63 billion in 2018
according to the government's draft budget, sources said Friday.
Contract renewals, hires, and rejigging the police forces are
part of the spending, while some will go to hiring new teachers.
Italy is awaiting the European Commission's final verdict on its
draft 2017 budget. The European Commission said earlier Friday
that it had received Italy's response to the letter it sent this
week asking Rome for clarification about its 2017 budget plans.
An EC spokesperson said the letters from Italy and four other
countries had landed. "Analysis continues for these member
States and for the others, as does dialogue with the capitals,"
the spokesperson said. "We will not make any further comment".
