Leaders of labor unions Fim, Fiom
and Uilm, during a worker protest on Friday, announced an 8-hour
general strike set for June 12 involving the entire Whirlpool
group.
The unions also announced a same-day protest demonstration
by workers of the northern Italian Varese Whirlpool plant.
Fim, Fiom and Uilm union general secretaries Marco
Bentivogli, Maurizio Landini and Rocco Palombella said involving
the entire Whirlpool group in the strike was "necessary to block
layoffs and plant closures, and to promote an industrial and
investment plan that outlines planning and production of
appliances in our country".
On Wednesday, Industry Minister Federica Guidi said a
Whirlpool plan to lay off 30% of its Italy workforce is
"unspeakable".
No progress has been made in spite of a month of
government-brokered talks between labor and management, the
minister said.
