Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo on
Friday announced that Italy's Flavio Briatore is making his
return to Formula One at the age of 74 as a consultant for its
BWT Alpine F1 Team.
Briatore made his name in the sport as the team principal of
Benetton in the 1990s, winning world titles with Michael
Schumacher.
He enjoyed more championship success with Fernando Alonso in the
mid-noughties at the head of Renault's F1 team before leaving
the post in 2009 after a scandal over race fixing at the 2008
Singapore Grand Prix.
A ban from motorsport imposed on Briatore by governing body FIA
over that case was overturned by a court.
"Briatore will predominantly focus on top level areas of the
team, including: scouting top talents and providing insights on
the driver market, challenging the existing project by assessing
the current structure and advising on some strategic matters
within the sport," a statement said.
Alpine are eighth in the 2024 F1 constructors' standings, having
picked up only five points so far this season.
