Italy's Australian Open champion
Jannik Sinner won his first match as world no. 1 Tuesday,
beating Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands in a comeback at
the tournament in Halle, Germany.
The 22-year-old South Tyrolean lost the first set in a tie break
to the 27-year-old world no 27 from Haarlem, then won the next
two, with a score of 6-3, 6-2, qualifying for the round of 16.
Sinner became world number one by getting into the French Open
semis where he lost to eventual champion, former US Open and
Wimbledon champ Carlos Alcaraz of Spain who is now no 2 ahead of
record longtime n. one and Serb great Novak Djokovic at three.
