It is serious when politics sways
judicial appointments, President Sergio Mattarella said
Wednesday.
"Recent events in some Western democracies show how serious the
consequences can be of an erosion of the pillars of the rule of
law when spaces of independence are removed from the judiciary,
or the appointments or careers of magistrates are politically
influenced," he told a delegation from the European Network of
Councils of Justice (ENCJ) at the presidential Quirinale palace
in Rome.
Mattarella also told the ENJC delegates that judicial
independence was essential for fair trials.
