The judiciary is responsible for
protecting rights, President Sergio Mattarella said Wednesday,
receiving a delegation of the European Network of Councils for
Justice (ENCJ) at the presidential Quirinale Palace in Rome.
"The judiciary is responsible for the protection of rights and
the associated guarantee of justice," he said.
"Without this, the rule of law based on the equality and dignity
of the individual would be seriously undermined.
"It is therefore necessary to safeguard the independence of the
judiciary, which at the same time constitutes a prerogative of
every member of the tertiary order and a right of every
citizen".
