Judicial independence is essential
for fair trials, President Sergio Mattarella said Wednesday.
Receiving a delegation from the European Network of Councils of
Justice (ENCJ) at the at Quirinale palace in Rome, Mattarella
said "the Court of Justice and the European Union have
underlined that the requisite of independence of judges is an
essential part of the fundamental right to a fair trial".
He said judicial independence was an "underlying event of a
democratic state".
