Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said
Wednesday Italy must compete with Chinese car manufacturers and
it was no use isolating oneself, amid reports the Italia
government is talking to several Chinese carmakers in a bid to
break Stellantis's national monopoly.
Speaking at the 40th annual Strategic Decision Conference in
Bernstein, Tavares said "protectionism lets you play for time
but you're gambling on tour future".
China's Dongfeng carmaker is among several auto groups, not only
Asian, that the government is talking to with a view to them
setting up a plant in Italy, Business and Made in Italy Minister
Adolfo Urso said recently.
Tavares also urged the Italian government to help consumers buy
electric vehicles.
