A 44-year-old worker fell to his
death in Modena in an accident at work Tuesday, the second fatal
workplace accident of the day and the latest in a long spate
that has spurred union and government action.
According to an initial reconstruction of the accident, the man
fell from a height of several metres and died instantly.
In the first accident reported Tuesday a 33-year-old worker was
crushed to death by machinery while working late Monday night at
the Fab factory in Gallo di Petriano (Pesaro Urbino), which
produces components for the furniture industry. Immediate help
was given, but the 118 personnel could only ascertain his death.
The two incidents are the latest in a long string of fatal
workplace accidents in Italy that has spurred union protests.
Five men died after inhaling toxic gas in a sewer network near
Palermo earlier this month, and seven died in a hydro power
plant blast near Bologna last month.
