Italy and 14 other EU countries wrote
to the European Commission Thursday saying they wanted "new
solutions" on migration beyond the recently approved Migration
Pact.
"If we want to continue our efforts to break the incentive
structures that drive irregular migratory movements and
dangerous journeys to Europe, complementary efforts are needed:
we believe that in order to tackle the root causes of irregular
migration and manage migratory movements to the EU, it will be
necessary for all of us to think outside the box and find new
ways to tackle this problem together at European level", said
the letter.
The EU executive said ti would take time to weigh the requests
in the letter.
"We need time to study it, it is a complex and rich text," a
spokesperson said.
"In the meantime we are focused on the implementation of the
Pact on Migration and Asylum, which has just been adopted," he
added.
