Historian and philologist Luciano
Canfora was indicted Tuesday for slandering Premier Giorgia
Meloni by calling her, among other things, a "neo-Nazi in her
soul".
Canfora, 81, one of Italy's foremost classicists, academics, and
leftwing public intellectuals, was sued for slander by the
premier for his remarks at a Bari high school debate on the
Russia-Ukraine war on April 11, 2022, when Meloni was the only
opposition to then premier Mario Draghi's national unity
government.
Canfora described Meloni, 47, who became Italy's first woman
premier later that year, as "a neo-Nazi in her soul", a "poor
wretch", and "an extremely dangerous beggar".
The trial will begin in Bari on October 7.
