Five people are confirmed dead following Friday's structural collapse at a supermarket building site in Florence, Tuscany Governor Eugenio Giani said on Saturday.
"We can now say that there are five people dead: it is certainly a dramatic toll," Giani told Lady Radio.
"Just a short while ago I received news that the last body is being recovered," he added.
Earlier on Saturday firefighters extracted the body of a fourth victim of the collapse, which reportedly occurred after a beam on the fourth floor of the Esselunga supermarket under construction in Via Mariti gave way.
Three workmen were also injured in the disaster but their condition is not said to be life-threatening.
Meanwhile, it emerged that the company that commissioned the construction, Esselunga's wholly owned real estate company Villata spa, and the building contractor Attività edilizie pavesi (AEP), based near Pavia, were both also involved in a building site accident at an Esselunga supermarket under construction in Genoa in February 2023, in which three workers were injured when a car park ramp collapsed.
